About Us

Few reasons for choosing us

Asha Niketan meaning “The House of Hope” is a Residential School for the deaf and has been one of the Premier Institutions promoted by KDDC. It is reaching greater heights year by year. Being catering to the differently abled children in the scope of speech and hearing impairment runs this residential school which has been considered as the part and parcel of the society. We believe that these speech and hearing impaired children have the right to basic education that will meet their needs and enable them to learn, thrive and achieve.

Children are undergoing formal education approved by Directorate of Empowerment of the Differently Abled and Senior Citizens and Education Department, Government of Karnataka, in various levels from Standard 1st to 10th. Students of Asha Niketan record 100% result in SSLC Examinations.

They are also given auditory training, speech therapy, lip reading and functional skills. Extra curricular activities also make a part of their learning. The children in the classroom are accommodated in the ratio of 10:1 teacher.

Our Activity

The Specially Trained Teachers make consistently positive learning experiences that engage and challenge all the students.
We provide health benefits through yoga, physical education, sports and games.
We highlight the importance of health and nutrition by inculcating in them the habit of personal cleanliness, hygienic stay and environment, and by providing nutritious food.
We support good mental health by showering love and affection and counselling if needed.
We help them develop transferable skills that can be used in and out of the classroom.
Focus is emphasized in self discipline, teamwork, leadership and co-operation to achieve its full potential
Children are made aware of their rights and responsibilities and are prepared thoroughly for adulthood and employability
We arrange Parents Training Programme as the end of the first and Second Semester. Parents are confident that their children are safe, happy and making good progress and that their voices are heard.
We know that the students will face challenges in their life, but we are confident that, with the right strategies and attitude they can flourish.

Founded on 7th October 1996 the ultimate aim of Asha Niketan is the “Development of the Whole Child” in which the child learns to recognise self-dignity through self-efforts towards self-reliance and sustainable development. And to this end we have laid the foundation that needs to be further developed. The Disabled are differently abled. They only need opportunity. Opportunity in every aspect of life-treatment, education, training, involvement and job. If they get it they always prove their mettle. Solidarity with the deaf-mutes does not mean a feeling of vague compassion or shallow distress at their misfortunes on the contrary, it is a firm determination to commit oneself. What is really needed is an awakening and sensitisation of the society.

KDDC envisioned that building impaired children was an important factor and that implied improving the lives of the children. There is no better way than giving them a conducive atmosphere to live, better opportunity to learn, more productive activities and better investment in health. Being developed they can contribute more towards the society.

Empowerment of the Deaf-Mutes is the necessary means to design modes of resistance to counter their disempowerment, construct their own identities and acquire the capacity to control decisions affecting their lives. Education, training, therapy, expression, information, knowledge, sharing, exposures form the backbone of this empowerment for the handicapped. We accomplish in our life time only a tiny fraction of the magnificent enterprise that is God’s Work.

A regular curriculum of activities fills the days of the inmates. The day commences at 6.00 A.M with yoga for physical fitness and athletic practices for these disadvantaged. Its through daily participation in physical activity that they increase their physical capacity, improve functionally impaired areas, master activities as well as get stimulated mentally and socially.

The type of assistance provided by Asha Niketan is :

Children : Rehabilitation – food, clothing, therapy, medical attention, education, etc.

Parents : Guidance and Special education through counselling services and trainings.

Public Attention : Social Awareness programmes enveloping strategies on how to prevent and control disability, acceptance of the handicapped, etc.

As we are in the 3rd millennium a new world is taking shape for these handicapped. The time is just right to increase sensitivity and commitment to meaningful action. Work with the deaf-mutes calls for a greater challenge and for a more committed struggle. This must be in the form of a shift from protection and wardship to emanicipation and to exclusion from integration. Together we shall journey to take Asha Niketan forward in this 21st Century.
